The prequel to Bad Grammar/Good Punctuation — Just Grammar is a straightforward explanation of the basic rules that govern our language, presenting the information that is background for good punctuation.

The book is approximately 100 pages of explanation of the connecting words, phrases and clauses, and the parts of speech. In addition, there are another 50 or so pages of exercises (with answers) to practice many of the concepts. There is a glossary of definitions and several handy resources in the back.
